Kitchen Chemistry, Suggested Grades: 4-6
"Good cooks make good chemists." Explore chemistry concepts through tasty demonstrations and discussions in the kitchen. After observing chemistry applied to cooking, students have a chance to predict and interpret results and apply what they have learned in an interactive way. This really helps open the young mind to see that chemistry is all around us. In addition students will participate in a hands-on experiment to create real butter during the lab.
During this 45-60 minute video conference, your classroom will learn about some chemical reactions that happen in the kitchen through exciting demonstrations and interactions with the Lab Director. Common kitchen preparations are presented in a way that inspires your students to view them as chemical experiments.
Only one class period is required for the pre-lab lesson (hands-on activity).
Lesson Plans
The pre-lab lesson requires approximately two to three 45-50 minute class periods. The post lab (optional) requires only 1 class period.
